Each year students at River Ridge invite international students studying in the tri-state area to visit our school and participate in various learning and social activities. Our guests are placed with local students and their families. Students usually arrive on Friday morning and are paired with the student with whom they will be staying. They learn about the culture of our school by attending morning classes. After lunch, all of our guests get together and meet each other. This is a time of great sharing and many questions. Later that evening we have a family potluck dinner at school and each student is asked to share something about their home country as well as their experiences thus far in the United States in our library. The evening then winds down with a bonfire before returning home with their local host family.
Saturday is a busy fun filled day where any River Ridge student can attend. We also have adult chaperones from the adult chapter of our AFS club. It is a great opportunity to meet and learn about the students and the countries where they live. Past activities have included local tourist attractions, shopping, bowling, swimming, and then a party at the home of the current River Ridge AFS student. By the end of the day many great friendships have been formed.
As an advisor of the AFS international club I love watching how the students interact with each other.
